TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Northeastern State Universitys Galaxy of the Stars Series, presented
by the Sequoyah Institute, presents a performance by Step Afrika to close the 2012-2013
season. The production is March 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for the Performing Arts.
Since its founding in 1994, Step Afrika has traveled the world showcasing stepping
and its history and tradition. The company is based in Washington D.C. and the first
cultural performance dedicated solely to stepping.
They are just phenomenal, said Anita Thompson, director of the Sequoyah Institute.
Ive seen a lot of performances, but this is very unique and very entertaining. It
incorporates rhythm, timing and the interpretation of beat.
Thompson said the connection to African American history sets Step Afrika apart from
other productions. She said audience members will appreciate seeing a different style
of dance and celebration of culture.
The thing about dance is that you are incorporating music and movement, said Thompson.
It is important for us to have a variety of ways to express ourselves, because not
everybody is good at everything. This is another avenue to appeal to the taste of
different people.
While this style of dance is progressive, Thompson said it also has deep roots in
African tribal dancing. She said this helps make the show appealing to a wide audience.
The Galaxy of the Stars offers free balcony admission to NSU students with a valid
ID. Prices per individual ticket are $20 for adults, $18 for NSU alumni, $16 for NSU
employees and seniors 60 and over and $10 for students.
